Sadly, I had to leave town the day of my friend's service. Steve was the friendliest guy and always wore a smile on his face. I remember him being a great drawer with a steady hand who could draw circles (heck, castles) around me in drafting class in the Chatard Annex. This is so sad for his family.

STEPHEN ALLEN JOHANTGES, 48, of Indianapolis went home to be with his grandparents on Saturday, August 6, 2016. He was born in Indianapolis, IN. November 11, 1967 to George Allen and Deborah Lee (Sanders) Johantges.

Steve (or Stevie to his family), was a loving and caring persona and let that show with his careers. He took care of his father for 8 years after his stroke. He also worked in the medical field for many years before finding his true passion of being an EMT. However, Stevie had many passions. First, he LOVED I U Basketball and worshipped the ground that Bobby Knight walked on. Stevie was also very involved in theatre while attending Bishop Chatard High School. He was also an avid reader and absolutely adored his first car, A Cougar, where he played countless tapes of Elvis Presley.

But, what kept a smile on his face were his Grandparents, the late Anabelle Johantges and Ernie and Juanita Sanders. These three individuals were his soulmates. I bet he’s up there now playing card with his Grandma’s and talking I U Basketball with his Grandpa.

Stevie is survived by: his parents, George and Deborah Johantges of Indianapolis, Indiana; his brother, Christopher Johantges, a sister-in-law (Megan Johantges) and an ex sister-in-law (Carol Johantges); 2 nephews, Brandon and Cameron Johantges; a step- nephew, Anthony Kramer; and multiple aunts, uncles and cousins. He is preceded in death by: grandparents, Carl and Anabelle Johantges; grandparents, Ernie and Juanita Sanders; and niece, Reagan Johantges.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, August 12, 2016 at Indiana Funeral Care; Harry W. Moore Chapel at 1 pm. Visitation will be from 11 -1, with burial at Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements by Indiana Funeral Care.

The year was 1984. It was my junior year.

The last 23 years brought about a name change to the dome, a class change for Chatard from 2A to 3A, and several inches to my waistline. But the glory of Chatard football remains.

The Trojan football team now shares the distinction with only one other team as having the most state championships--NINE!!!
I witnessed the first two of those during my sophmore and junior years at Chatard. Though I didn't play high school football, I was a proud member of the squad's 12th man.

The 1984 game was most memorable for its location, the sparkling new gem on the Indianapolis skyline, the $82 million Hoosier Dome. With memories of that game on my mind, I returned to the dome for this year's championship game. I wasn't disappointed. Save for a late fumble, the Trojans would have shut out South Bend's St. Joseph. It was total domination from the first whistle.

I had to be there to witness the last high school football championship to be played in the famed dome. Next year, retractable-roofed Lucas Oil Stadium becomes the shining new gem on Indy's skyline and the dome will be razed. The memories, however, will live on. I'm just thankful that Chatard was able to begin a legacy there in 1984 that lives on today.

Congrats to the Trojans, state champions for the ninth time, an Indiana High School Athletic Association record!
Photo credit: Joe Vitti, The Indianapolis Star, 2007
CMDhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05030180805789592988noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17962324.post-59403982671113343472007-10-28T11:36:00.000-04:002007-10-28T11:43:32.533-04:0025-Year Reunion?
